This work provides a detailed look at the construction of a curtain. As in architectural order, there is a sequence of functionally necessary elements, proportions, and composition, and a balance between ornamentation and logic. The load-bearing element may be a straight pillar, or it may be a column in a Composite order. The division element may be a rectangular piece of fabric, or it may be a curtain in a New Order. The comfort of the modern paradigm lies in the freedom of choice across the entire spectrum and in the ability to move from one extreme to the other.Part of the exhibition “Slouchers” curated by @_aleksandr_delev and @texxeen, location - “Kotti-Shop”, Berlin.

Kitchen renovation as an art project.
With this project, I initiate a series of artworks that enable me to deduct the costs of everyday needs from my yearly tax declaration.
Where do I draw a line between me as a professional, as an artist, and as a person?

My origins are from Russia and Armenia.I took my mom’s Armenian surname as an artistic name since the beginning of the practice
cure.tain. But I never put this part of my cultural heritage into artistic expression. During my
upbringing, not much Armenian culture was passed on to me. My mom also does not speak the
language. My Armenian identity is something barely seen even by me.

My mom compiled the stories from her parents, aunt, letters, and memoirs into a family story dating
back to 1885. Last year I read it and understood a lot about my family, our history.

One branch of my ancestors ran from Karabach in 1893 under Ottoman’s Empire pressure to
Turkmenistan, Merv. It was one of the major cities on the Silk Road from China.

During my last visit to Russia, I saw again a rug which my mom inherited from her great-
grandmother. It was great-grandma's dowry when she lived in Turkmenistan.

Recently I asked my mom to photograph the rug, and in discussion with her printed it over a thin
ecover silk. Out of this print, I create Noren, a type of curtain used as a soft barrier between spaces.
This work is a tribute to my roots, to female strength passed on to me through generations. The
image of the rug, which is older than a century, is printed on an ephemeral thin textile. This is also a
reflection of the fragility of something I considered endlessly durable. A fear of losing mom became
very present for me in recent times.

“Anxious-avoidant”, 2024steel and rhinestone chainsAs part of WORK LIFE BALANCE exhibition curated by @billy____jacob
Work represents a malfunctioning mode of attachment called the anxious-avoidant style in modern psychology. Red and white steel chains are usually used as a barrier, a protection, an element of defence. The rhinestones are meant to attract, to sparkle, to flutter in the light. What do these chains protect and whose attention do they attract? There is no criticism here of the way we relate to others, but an intention to express a personal conflict, to translate a mental construct into physical expression.
The presence of the work in the exhibition space was perforative in its own way. The weight of the steel chains pulled the connecting elements from the floor with such force that they snapped off several times. The rhinestone chains were so fragile that visitors didn't notice them lying on the ground, walked over and broke them unknowingly. It was a physical and at the same time metaphorical self-destruction of the construction.

summer house

For a citizen, there is a gradual transfer from public to private through a sequence of “steps”: district,
street, building, common area, apartment, personal room. What can a personal room in a public space look
like?

Me and Greta created a structure that allows us to appropriate a piece of Berlin and have a direct link between
urban and personal scales. Installation of the textile element and the use of it became a performative action.
We thought of how this action would be perceived by other participants of urban life. Somehow no one
was bothered or provoked by our installation. And it felt very organic to stay within the room we created. It
provided us with a shadow and a surface to enjoy the sun. This very personalized bubble made us feel more
connected to Berlin.

This project was done in the framework of FURKA IN : DÉP 24, 2400 m residency by UCJ ETHZ, Studio Jan de Vylder
Arriving on site, I was overwhelmed by the
beauty and majesty of nature. The location
of Furka Pass, the building itself, the group
of artists, and the given creative freedom
seemed like a fairy tale to me. The idea of
what could be done during the residency
came before arriving there. But I gave it time and space to evolve into something
generated more by the place and less by
my mind. Before we, as a group, could start
the actual work, the outbreak of Norovirus
caught us. The day most of us woke up sick was gloomy and cloudy, the building was wrapped in fog, and it was cold
and wet. I took a Paracetamol and with
sublimed progress of sickness went on
working, stretching the lashing strap with
ratchet between the two rocks. In my artistic language, the use of ropes is an attempt
to embrace and get closer to the object of
my admiration. The next day, most of us
were sick, moving around with difficulty, and experiencing all the symptoms of the
virus. The whole idyllic setting turned into
a hospital. People were lying in their rooms;
the few ones who felt better were nursing
the sick ones. On the borderline between
inability to sleep and delirious dreams, an
idea came to me. The army blankets I was
initially interested in have a Swiss flag on
some of them. If the colors of the flag are
reversed, you get a red cross on a white
background, a symbol of medical care, a
hospital. That's how the final work came
about: a piece of blanket hung on the lash-
ing straps. One side of it is a compilation
of symbols that create an idyllic image: the Swiss flag, a clock chain, a bell that repeats
the sounds made by grass-fed sheep, a
postcard landscape. On the other side, the
flag turns into a medical cross, and the bell
reminds one of a hotel, or a hospital, when people in need ring, the background landscape
goes through some works, is excavated. This
work is situational. It is perceived from two
sides, and the image depends on the standpoint of view. For me, this work reflects
the experience of landing in one situation
and the transformation of that situation into
a completely new one by a small, invisible
force. Both sides were equally beautiful
and powerful. I felt connected to the other members of the residency. Caring for each
other was as beautiful as the monolithic
beauty of the mountains, sky, and sun.

“Construction-site-specific” is a part of the “Altered angles” exhibition at Vaust Gallery. The work is a continuation of an ongoing exploration of curtain and its potential. The first level is the search for the balance between the use of materials from the ordinary hardware shop
and forms that come from classical, baroque interiors. The second level is the observation of how a large surface in an interior space affects people. A curtain
made of film diffuses light in the room, makes a quiet sound when the air blows, and invites one to touch it.
Placed in front of the window, it has a specific appearance from the outside. At first glance, looking like a regular cover for a space during the renovation, it hints at a different purpose
with its organised, curated form.

A curtain as a soft wall. Soft wall made of printed bricks.

„3rd order of simulacrums - faking reality and hiding the immediate absence of reality (when the model no longer exists). A sign hiding the fact that the original does not exist. Simulacrum itself.“- Wikipedia

I find it funny to use textiles with a pattern reminiscent of computer games: Sims or Minecraft. Unrealistic, bluntly applied, it touches something in my soul. Creating a fake wall in reality and superimposing a bad texture on it is like a joke. A joke on this constant attempt to simulate reality with polished renderings of architectural projects. Or, a joke on the more recent, painfully alien reality of images created by artificial intelligence.
